Biewer Facts
Personality/Temperament: The Biewer is elegant and self-assured with confidence. A sensitive and intelligent dog whose only purpose is to serve man as a companion. They are lively, determined and playful. They are quick to learn with consistent training. They are brave and generally get along well with children and other household pets.
They will always alert you to strangers. They get very attached to their human family and may become very unhappy if left alone for long periods of time. The Biewer has a need to constantly be in the presence of its owner.
Their agility also means that they will leap on and off beds and couches several times their own height, presenting a risk of injury. They will insist on sleeping directly next to their owners at night. The Biewer is highly sensitive to its owner's moods and will know they are about to be left alone even before you reach for your keys.

- Coat: Hair on body moderately long, glossy with a fine silky texture 3/4 down the body to floor-length.

- Compatibility: When correctly trained and handled, the Biewer generally gets along with other animals.

- Suitability as watchdog: Excellent. They are very alert and will let you know when there is someone at the door.
- Noise factor: They can be noisy.
- Feeding: Only feed a high quality dog food and stick to one brand. They do not tolerate changing their diet every now and then. Do not feed from the table, they spoil easily and can be difficult to retrain to a dog food only diet.
- Health: The Biewer is generally healthy and strong if cared for correctly. They do need to have their teeth checked at about 8 months of age as they may retain some of their puppy teeth. Indiscriminate and unethical breeding may result in numerous health issues.
- Availability: Purebred Biewers are rare and breeding-quality dogs even more so. Be prepared to wait for well-bred puppies and the waiting lists at some oversees breeders may be as long as three years. Contact us for references to reputable breeders.
A few notes to buyers:
- It is very important to see the dam with her puppies and, if possible, the sire as well. Ask for previous buyers' references and check them.
- A Biewer puppy should never be separated from its mother and siblings before the age of 10 weeks. They mature more slowly than other breeds and only learn behaviour like Bite Inhibition from their mother and siblings between the ages of 8 to 10 weeks.
- Where are the puppies registered? The Kennel Union of South Africa (KUSA) is the only internationally accepted registry in South Africa. Most Biewer puppies are registered with KUSA and/or Canine SA. Be aware of disreputable registries.
- Research the breed and the breeder before buying and visit the breeder as often as you can.
- Remember that all puppies are cute, but some may not grow into the dog you had in mind when you bought the puppy.
- Some bloodlines are best avoided as there may be genetic health issues.
- Ask the breeder for a health guarantee and get a health certificate from a qualified veterinarian stating that the puppy is in good health.
